Welcome to the McLaren 650S

More power, more pace and an angry face: meet McLaren´s new 641bhp, 207mph supercar.

It’s been teased, it’s been partially leaked, but here it is in all its glory: the McLaren 650S.

Here’s what you need to know. The 650S is not the long-rumoured ‘baby McLaren’, the car codenamed ‘P13′ set to do battle with the Porsche 911, but rather an upgraded 12C that’ll sit above that car – but of course below the epic P1 – in McLaren’s range.

Confused? Let’s try to explain. The McLaren 650S is a more powerful, harder version of the 12C, described by McLaren as ‘its fastest, most engaging, best equipped and most beautiful series-production supercar yet’.

It uses an uprated version of the 12C’s 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8, with power boosted from 616bhp to 641bhp (that’s 650 metric horsepower, hence the name). Torque is up by around 10 per cent.

You want performance figures? How about 0-62mph in 3.0 seconds and a top speed of 207mph? Small improvements on the 12C’s stats (3.1 seconds and 204mph) they may be, but small improvements that keep the 650S just ahead of the Ferrari 458 Italia.

You’ll notice the new front end, which obviously draws heavily on the P1. The lights are now LED affairs, while there are larger air intakes both in the nose and in front of the rear wheels, which not only aid cooling but also contribute to the 650S’s improved aero.

Impressively, the 650S boasts the same drag coefficient as the 12C, but produces 24 per cent more downforce at 150mph.

The 650S uses the same adaptive damping system as the 12C. Though the spring rates have been increased to ‘improve driver engagement’, McLaren says there’s no loss of comfort, promising the ride of an ‘executive saloon’. We’re also told that steering feedback and brake feel are improved over the not-at-all-shoddy 12C.

More kit, too: there are new five-spoke alloys, bespoke Pirelli tyres, more electronic infotainment cleverness and the option of carbon race seats.

So far, so mid-life facelift. But here’s the confusing bit. The 650S doesn’t replace the 12C, but rather sits above it. How far above? We’re told around £20,000 atop the 12C’s £176,000 asking price.

Which, when you consider the extra standard kit (especially considering the 650S gets carbon ceramic brakes as standard, a £10k option on the 12C), makes you wonder why any buyer would opt for the 12C when they could have the 650S – a car apparently improved by five per cent in every department – for much the same money.

All shall become clear when the 650S Coupe and Spider make their official debut at the Geneva show in early March. For now, what do you make of that new face?

Aston Martin Snow Gliding

If the slow and tiresome winter days have left you without motivation, we have just the thing to put a little pep into your step. It’s a video of an Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, a car that’s as cool as icebergs, drifting on snow and ice.

The shots were captured by NM2255 in Saint Moritz, a famous tourist destination for Europe’s rich and famous. We did a little digging and found the event took place throughout last week. Guests stayed at the five-star Kempinski Gand hotel, “a beautifully decorated luxury property, offering the best standards of accommodation and hospitality, combined with a relaxed and welcoming atmosphere.”

The ice “training” took place between 9AM and 4 in the afternoon, with every fast Aston imaginable being provided there.

Black Satin Ferrari F12 Berlinetta looking good.

Modifying a supercar is not that easy because the percentage of screwing it up is much higher than the one in which the vehicle will end up looking even better than the original one, and it seems that the crew at Elite Wrap has done the impossible. The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in question has received an awesome matte black wrap, complete with the satin finish, a red front splitter, a set of black and red Vossen aftermarket and some other tweaks.

The Ferrari F12 Berlinetta has been introduced during the 2012 Geneva Motor Show and it’s coming as the official replacement of the 599 GTB. The supercar is offered in a two-door coupe body style, with a front mid-engine and a rear-wheel drive layout. Power is being provided by a 6.3 liter naturally aspirated V12 engine, shared with the FF, which is good for 730 HP (544 kW) at 8,250 rpm and 690 Nm (509 lb-ft) of torque, available at 6,000 rpm. The unit is mated to a 7-speed dual clutch automated semi-automatic transmission. The 0 to 100 km/h sprint takes 3.1 seconds and top speed stands at 340 km/h (210 mph).

Aston Martin v Dog. Aston Martin wins owners heart.

A car fanatic has given away pet pooch after it made a dog’s breakfast of his $160,000 Aston Martin.

English builder Royston Grimstead came home to find his border collie spaniel cross, Luce, had chewed through the fibre glass of his 15-month-old luxury car.

The newfound chew-toy amounted to almost $6000 of damage, The Daily Mail reported.

“I came home and saw her covered in white stuff and I thought she had got a bird and it was feathers – but it was the fibreglass from the car,” Grimstead said.

“She had chewed out a huge chunk. I just laughed. I mean, what else could I do? I’m not a crier and she knew she had done something wrong because she had this guilty look on her face.”

Grimstead had already been considering re-homing Luce as she didn’t get on with his other dog.

He believed it may have been an act of revenge.

“She must have overheard me talking about re-homing her because she’s normally friendly and never really chewed on anything before.”

He gave Luce away the day after the incident.

“I didn’t tell the new owners what she had done – I expect when they hear I’ll find Luce back on my doorstep.”

The car was insured against the damage and is expected to be repaired next week.

Jaguar and Chrysler go head to head at the Super Bowl 2014.

Everybody loves a villain. And the Jaguar F-Type ad has three of them – Sir Ben Kingsley, Mark Strong and Tom Hiddleston. The three actors are all British, of course. Because that’s how Hollywood likes its bad guys – and that is also the riff that this advert plays on. Why are movie villains always British? Because they are evil geniuses, cool, commanding and super-suave. And they drive Jaguars.

This is the first time Jaguar has shelled out for a Super Bowl slot – and they have thrown everything at it. Oscar-winning director Tom Hooper (The King’s Speech) puts together a glossy, high-octane production with jets, helicopters and car chases.

It doesn’t always make too much sense.

“Feels muddled instead of the sexy beast it should have been,” sniffs industry bible Adweek, referencing Sir Ben’s scariest creation of all, foul-mouthed Cockney psychopath Don, from Sexy Beast. Now that would have been an ad. Adweek gives Jaguar a C-grade in its round-up.

Chrysler and Bob Dylan Super Bowl Commercial
Chrysler and Bob Dylan Super Bowl Commercial 2014

That, incidentally, is how big this thing is in the US – there are websites dedicated to discussing and rating the new Super Bowl ads as if they are the latest Hollywood blockbusters. It is advertising as event.

And Chrysler are past masters of it. Their 2012 Super Bowl ad featuring Clint Eastwood (“it’s half-time, America”) was a jaw-dropping hymn to wounded American pride and resilience. Now we get Bob Dylandelivering a two-minute paean to just how cool America is.

“What could be more American than America?” he asks as the stock footage of iconic Americana begins to roll. You’ve got us there, Bob. The pay-off is priceless: “Let Germany brew your beer/Let Switzerland build your watch/Let Asia assemble your phone/We will build your car.”

So that’s the American brewing and watch-making industry finished, then

Having Bob Dylan in an ad feels like an event in itself (it shouldn’t – he’s been in several of them before, including one for Victoria’s Secret underwear) but it got Adweek, which gave it an A, raving: “Dylan is a cool cat, and this ad has a hell of a lot of swagger.”

Some critics have questioned whether its bombastic appeal to patriotism really works now that Chrysler is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Italian car giant Fiat.

Jaguar is no longer British-owned either – it is part of Indian conglomerate Tata. But their ad plays on its outsider status, daring the car buyer to go with something a little bit edgy.

Jaguar also steals a march on Chrysler in the event stakes – with online teasers ahead of the main event, a making of video and a website with tips on how to be a super-villain. Its twitter hashtag is doing good business.

Chrysler, by contrast, kept their ad under wraps until the third quarter of the big game.

By which time, as Forbes magazine points out, the Super Bowl was all but over as a contest and many viewers had switched off.

A victory for British super-villainy?

Jaguar Super Bowl Advert Part II

Last week we brought you a teaser featuring Sir Ben Kingsley looking every bit the sinister British villain as he mugged for the new Jaguar F-Type Jaguar coupe. This week we can reveal two more “British villains” wrapped up in the “sinister” carmaker’s commercial campaign.

First try this dark little teaser featuring film star Tom Hiddleston (best known for his work in “The Avengers” and “War Horse”) who hints at the Jaguar’s ability to quickly move four business associates…

Does he mean riding in the car with him, or in the new coupe’s spacious trunk, though? (Yeah, we know that’s the obvious joke! Let us play along!)

The other “villain” making an appearance alongside Hiddleston and Kingsley is actor Mark Strong (“Sherlock Holmes,” “Zero Dark Thirty,” and “Kick-Ass,” to name a few of his films). Together, these three Brits do indeed make up a perfect trio of British villains.

Now all we have to do is wait for is the actual Jaguar Super Bowl commercial and see if it is worth all the hype – even veteran Super Bowl ad hawks like us have to admit that this has been a nearly unprecedented level of pre-commercial marketing effort… and expense!

Vintage Porsche 911 for Kate Moss´s 40th Birthday.

She just turned 40 last week, but supermodel Kate Moss shows no signs of slowing down.

After a slew of events to help her celebrate the big 4-0, Kate and husband Jamie Hince took her new vintage Porsche out for a spin on the weekend. Kate was dressed in black, accordingly, with a black biker jacket, sunglasses and skinny black jeans.

The car, a black 911, was presented to the supermodel on her birthday and clearly Kate and Jamie have just been itching to get behind the wheel and take the sportscar out.

Kate and husband Jamie were clearly excited about taking the car, reportedly costing some £20,000 as they smiled excitedly during their journey.

The  Croydon-born mum-of-one was seen pulling up at her Oxfordshire home in her  new Porsche 911, alongside a whole host of celebrity pals on Saturday  evening.

Kate had been enjoying a spot of dinner at the The Five Alls pub, at Filkins Cotswold Inn with her husband just beforehand.

And despite partying non-stop for days, Kate looked fresh-faced as she pulled up with Jamie.

She was dressed in a simple, yet ever stylish, all-black ensemble, with  skinny jeans, a sheer top exposing a camisole underneath, a pair of  suede knee-high boots and a leather biker jacket with arm fringing.

Her long, blonde locks appeared smooth and silky and her skin was radiant,  appearing to be wearing only a touch of cheek blush and nude lipstick.

Kate celebrated her actual birthday last Thursday with a long, boozy lunch,  followed by a late meal at The Dorchester later that evening.

For lunch, Kate partied with Naomi Campbell, Stella McCartney, Sadie Frost, Jo Wood, Mario Testino and Sir Phillip Green at the 34 restaurant in  Mayfair.

As she quaffed champagne, vodka and cocktails with  friends, Kate was heard to insist: ‘I might be 40 but I still know how  to party.’

Onlookers said they ordered very little food, only starters and a few nibbles, in two and a quarter hours at the restaurant. After leaving 34 at 6.30pm, she then headed straight to the Dorchester Hotel, where she partied until 1.30am.
