Fancy a Driving Tour in Sicily?

This week was an exciting one for HPI Luxury Car Hire with the arrival of the  Lamborghini Huracan which is now available to hire (more on that soon) and a trip to Sicily to oversee the delivery of 3 super cars for one of our customers.

Here is one of our company directors Sophie with the 3 cars safely delivered to the client

sicily tour delivery

As you can see the cars requested by the customer was a Ferrari F12, Lamborghini Aventador Roadster and the McClaren MP4 – 12C and they were used for a tour around the beautiful island of Sicily.

The tour is actually a organised event by The Jewel Events society who run a number of driving tours around the world. The one in Sicily is a 9 day event and takes in all the amazing scenery, locations, culture, history  and hospitality that Sicily has too offer.

All the participants drive a mixture of classic cars, luxury motors and sports cars but unfortunately you have to be invited to join the trip. However there is no reason why you can’t put your own tour together and enjoy this spectacular island in a supercar of your choice from one of our fleet.

Why Not Hire a Maserati Ghibli For Your Next Trip

If your thinking of hiring a smart sport saloon for your next trip in the Uk or Europe have a look at the Maserati Ghibli.

Now I know the name is a little odd but we love it as the Ghibli is fast becoming one of our most popular requests especially for business trips and it is easy to see why.

Not only do you get  stylish design, comfortable interior and great performance but you can rent a Maserati Ghibli for a lot less than you would think.

Click here to contact out reservation team to find out the latest prices to rent a Maserati Ghibli.

To convince you even more here is a quick of the Ghibli review done by Top Gear last year.

It’s only taken Maserati 99 years to have a crack at the intensely competitive upper medium segment. With big expansion plans – 50,000 cars per year by 2015 – the Ghibli leads the company’s valiant charge out of its cult cul-de-sac and into the mainstream.

Do many BMW, Audi, Jaguar or Mercedes owners care, or will the Ghibli have to perform some sort of Mediterranean Jedi mind trick to persuade them?

The UK gets three versions: a 3.0-litre, 272bhp V6 turbodiesel, and single and twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 cars, with 325bhp and 404bhp respectively. At £48,830, the diesel clearly fancies its chances at the business end – it’s less powerful but pricier than Audi’s brilliant biturbo V6, for example – and this VM Motori-developed unit is only going to be around as long as it takes Maserati to develop a more potent twin-turbo unit (that’ll probably rock up in 2016). Still, 443lb ft from 2000rpm is useful enough, and the combination of 50:50 weight distribution, a mechanical limited slip diff (the only car in its class to be so equipped), and a seriously good chassis add up to a package that has enough talent to justify the famous badge.

The hydraulic steering set-up is surprisingly meaty, the eight-speed paddle-shift ZF gearbox is as silkily responsive as ever, and though the ride – double wishbones at the front, multi-link rear, passively damped with the option of a ‘Skyhook’ adaptive set-up – can be fussy on broken surfaces, it’s good enough. Barely lighter than the full-size QP at 1835kg, the Ghibli uses a mix of steel and aluminium in its construction, but it feels pretty chunky most of the time, especially in diesel form, although its body control is impressive. Sixty takes just over six seconds, and Maserati claims 48mpg overall. Needless to say, if you drive it like you mean it you’ll decimate that figure.

The base petrol V6 is a sweeter car, and unsurprisingly feels more like a ‘proper’ Maserati. It’s much rev-hungrier, sounds as fruity as any Italian car ever has – the Ghibli uses sound actuators and an exhaust bypass valve for the full Pavarotti effect – and is generally more fun to be around and in. The 404bhp Ghibli S at the launch was the all-wheel drive Q4 version that won’t be coming to the UK, but proves that the chassis can handle much more power. It’s terrific fun, and will most likely be even more entertaining in rear-drive form when it lands here at the end of the year (at a rather steep £63,415).

It’s mostly lovely inside too, better and much less blingy than the Quattroporte. There’s frameless glass in the doors, handsome leather seats, and a Maserati clock in the middle of the fascia. There’s the option of a magnificent 1280w Bowers & Wilkins audio system, the sat nav is clear and easy to use, and the dual zone climate control has hurricane levels of puff. The leather and wood in the various cars I tried was all very high quality, but the touchscreen multi media system’s graphics are less convincing, and the gear-selector is absolutely hopeless to use, with no decent demarcation between P, R and D. Rear cabin space is a bit tight, too.

It boils down to one simple question: should you? In isolation, the Ghibli is convincingly seductive and perfectly credible. The diesel emits 158g/km, and sits in the 26 per cent company car tax banding, so it’s there or thereabouts if you want or need to get empirical and subjective.

But forget all that, and just imagine saying the word Maserati should someone ask what you car your picking up for your next trip. Sounds good, no?

The special edition features unique styling throughout, including a rear spoiler and SportDesign mirrors painted in high-gloss black, providing the vehicle with an immediate point of distinction against other 911 Turbo S vehicles. The storage compartment lid features a Union Jack embossed into the leather and a high quality silver chrome finish. The carbon dashboard inlay meanwhile features the logo ‘911 – Turbo S – Exclusive GB Edition’.

Marking a half century since the release of the original Porsche 911, the new model is available exclusively in the UK and will set buyers back £159,054, making it £10,000 more than the standard Turbo.

The Final Bugatti Veyron Legend to be named after Founder

The final model in the Bugatti Veyron Legend series will be named after the founder of the company Ettore Bugatti. This will the sixth model in this series and will be revealed this week durig the Monterey Car Show.

Honouring Ettore Bugatti, the founder and patron of the brand, it is based on the historical model Type 41 Royale. As with the five previous Legends, only three of the final Legends model will be produced, each costing a cool €2.35 million net. Bugatti is presenting all six Bugatti Legends together for the first and only time.

“Ettore Bugatti is our ‘patron’. His demand that an automobile be a perfect harmony of technology and aesthetics still applies to us today,” said Wolfgang Dürheimer, President of Bugatti Automobiles. “Ettore Bugatti always strived for the creation of a total work of art. His ideas and vehicles set the foundation stone for an automobile brand that was lauded then and now as the most valuable in the world. Ettore Bugatti himself is a legend. It was clear from the start that we should dedicate the final Legends model to him personally.”

The “Ettore Bugatti” Legend is based on the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, as are all the other Legends. The super sports car is powered by a 1,200 PS, 8-litre W16 engine that transmits 1,500 Nm at 3,000 to 5,000 rpm to the tarmac and rockets it from zero to 100 km/h in 2.6 seconds. With a maximum speed of 408.84 km/h (254 MPH) with the roof down, the Vitesse is the world’s fastest production roadster ever built.

The design of the carbon body is based on a 1932 Type 41 Royale with the chassis number 41111 and sports a “yin-yang” colour split. The front part is made of hand-polished aluminium and finished with a clear coating – a feature unique to Bugatti cars. For the first time, this material is used for the entire front and side panels, while the rear, sill panels and A-pillar trims are finished with dark-blue exposed carbon.

The polished, diamond-cut wheel rims were specially developed for this vehicle and colour-coordinated with a dark-blue finish. They are inspired by the eight-spoke wheel created by the company founder for his racing cars, like the famous Type 35 and thus bear the name “Ettore Bugatti.”

Other exterior details include the Bugatti horseshoe and the EB logo at the rear finished in platinum and the signature of the company’s founder engraved into the tank and oil cap and painted in silver.

Two types of leather have been used for the first time in the interior. Traditional calf’s leather features throughout the cabin, but parts that are typically touched by hand – including the steering wheel rim, gear lever, door handles, centre console armrest and door handle recesses – are covered in an exclusive, natural cordovan leather.

The tanning process alone for cordovan leather takes around six months. It is typically used for high-quality shoes and is particularly durable and sure to the touch.

The focal point of the interior is the platinum-coated dancing elephant, that is inset in the cover of the rear centre box and reminiscent of the hood ornament of the Type 41 Royale. The figure was originally sculpted by Ettore’s brother, Rembrandt.

The “Brun Cavalier” leather-clad insert in the centre console extension bears the “Les Légendes de Bugatti” nameplate and the relief of the dancing elephant while the door sills too, bear the portrait and signature of Ettore Bugatti.

Alongside the world premiere of the Ettore Bugatti Legend, for the first and only time, Bugatti will be presenting all six models of the Legends Edition on Friday, August 15 at “The Quail: A Motorsports Gathering” and also on Sunday, August 17 at the “Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance”.

New lightweight E Type Jaguar revealed

One of the most iconic cars of all time has to be the E type Jaguar and as a classic car investment they are extremely popular. Now if you have a million dollars spare you can get hold of the new lightweight E type Jaguar that has just been released after years in production.

However you had better be quick because there are only 6 available.

The new examples complete the ‘Special GT E-type’ project that was started in 1963. Just 12 of the planned 18-car original run were built. The remaining six chassis numbers are set to appear on the newly created examples.

Designed for racing, the Lightweight E-types will be built to the exact specification of the original cars, allowing them to be used in historic racing events.

Power comes from an aluminium-block 3.8-litre straight six engine, which turns out 335bhp and 280lb ft of torque. It drives through a four-speed manual gearbox and is based on the engine that powered the D-type to Le Mans victory in 1957.

Crucial to the E-type’s design is its lightweight aluminium bodyshell, which saves 114kg over the standard E-type. Jaguar engineers have decided to eschew modern construction methods, as used on the aluminium-bodiedF-type and XJ, in favour of the original techniques.

Inner and outer surfaces of the car were digitally scanned, with most body panels then being reproduced at Jaguar’s Whitley engineering centre. With the bodywork complete, the cars will be mated to the engine’s subframe before being transferred to the company’s Browns Lane site to be completed.

The Lightweight E-type features twin-wishbone suspension at the front and an independent wide-based wishbone set-up at the rear, tuned to perform best under racing conditions. The E-type’s rack and pinion steering is fitted and the car sits on 15-inch wheels. An aluminium hard-top is also included.

Inside, aluminium bucket seats feature in a functional-looking cabin, which has a wood-trimmed steering wheel and push-button starter.

The project is being overseen by Jaguar Heritage, part of Jaguar Land Rover’s new Special Operations division. The first of the new Lightweight E-types, dubbed Car Zero, will be shown at Pebble Beach before six other examples are built.

Jaguar design boss Ian Callum said: “With the Lightweight E-type, our focus as a design team has been to ensure justice was done to the original work of Sir William Lyons and Malcolm Sayer.

“I believe the result is a new Lightweight E-type that is as stunning now as the originals would have been when they were new.”

Bentley is Set for Record Sales in 2014

Although most of the British brand cars are actually foreign owned these days it seem the brands themselves are stronger than ever.

Bentley is the latest luxury car brand that has the British connection to announce that sales this year are up to record levels.

Apparently it has seen a  a 23% increase in deliveries in the first half of the year.

Bentley delivered 5,254 cars in the first six months of 2014, up from 4,279 cars in the first half of 2013.

The firm’s new Flying Spur drove up sales by 61% in China, which saw more than a fifth of Bentley’s deliveries.

Bentley’s sales echoed rival Rolls-Royce, which saw a 33% boost in sales in the half year to June.

“There is no question that some markets will remain tough, but we are confident of a good 2014,” said Bentley board member for sales Kevin Rose.

The Americas region, which includes North and South America and the Caribbean, remained as Bentley’s largest market, with 1,388 cars delivered. China followed, then Europe and the Middle East.

A Flying Spur typically sells for around £150,000, while a GT V8 sells for about £130,000.

Bentley is a subsidiary of Volkswagen, which also owns the Porshe and Audi brands.

The Aston Martin Lagonda is Back

If your of a certain age you may remember the Aston Martin Lagonda saloon car that was made by Aston Martin between 1974 and 1990.

With it’s sleek long bonnet it was pretty to easy to identify should you see one out on the road. However catching a glimpse of one was a pretty rare event as only 645 were ever made in the UK.

Here is one in all its glory

aston lagonda old

Now the Aston Martin Lagonda is too make a comeback return but in name only. Aston Martin recently announced that they were launching a limited edition saloon model some of which will bear the Lagonda Badge

The new model is being produced in response to specific demand in the Middle Eastern market, and although it will be based on existing Aston Martin architecture and takes its styling inspiration from the famous 1976 Lagonda designer William Towns, it will feature the latest in production technology such as carbon fibre body panels.

The new Lagonda model will be hand-built by Aston Martin’s highly-skilled craftsmen in a dedicated production building at the company’s Gaydon plant Warwickshire, the same building previously used in the creation of the One-77 hypercar.
Aston Martin Car Design Director Marek Reichman said: “The debut of this luxury super saloon in the Middle East market will be an exciting moment not only for Aston Martin, but for discerning customers who are seeking the ultimate in luxury and personalisation.”

“The new model, like its exclusive siblings the One-77 and V12 Zagato, has been created as a piece of exceptional automotive art. It has been designed and developed entirely in keeping with the spirit and ethos of previous Lagonda super saloons – notably the William Towns Lagonda – and as a tribute to this car it proudly bears the Lagonda nameplate.”

Lexus GS450h perfectly combines luxury with hybrid

Can you have luxury in a hybrid car? We all want to do our part in helping the environment, but giving up style and luxury to do so is not as appealing to everyone. Let me introduce you to the Lexus GS450h and see what you think of this luxury hybrid.

hen hybrid cars started appearing on the market around the turn of this century, they were universally Spartan. Their one luxury was the readout on the dash that gave you electronic feedback about your driving habits. Fifteen years later, hybrids come in all shapes, sizes, and classes, including full-on luxury, like the Lexus GS450h. It offers good fuel economy, but when you’re driving a $60,000 car, is “economy” really what you’re after?

The hybrid drivetrain combines to make the Lexus GS450h the most powerful car in the GS line-up. The gas-powered, 24-valve, 3.5-liter V-6 is good for 286 hp, and the permanent electric motor can develop 200 hp. When they combine, the power rating is 338 hp, which bests any other GS by 32 hp.

Unlike GS350 rear-drive trims, the GS450h has a continuously variable transmission, as opposed to an 8-speed automatic. It features shift paddles so you can manually shift “gears,” but it’s not really something the car excels at. To really feel the promise of such a setup, you have to experience something like the twin-clutch, direct-shift gearbox on a Volkswagen, rather than a CVT whose manual mode just holds the engine at a higher RPM longer. Continuously variable transmissions do offer somewhat higher fuel mileage than a traditional automatic by keeping the engine at optimal RPM, but they simply sap all the fun out of driving something with a modern 7- or 8-speed automatic.

It puts a damper on the additional power in the GS450h and delivers a performance similar to the lesser GS trims. Lexus proclaims that the car is quicker by a tenth of a second than the rear-drive versions of the other GS trims, and is two-tenths of a second faster than the all-wheel-drive versions you’re likely to see in New England. But when Car and Driver evaluated this hybrid against its traditionally powered stablemates, it came in at as much as two-tenths of a second slower.

Part of the reason this car is only marginally quicker despite the power is weight. Adding an electric motor and a battery pack equals as much as 400 pounds, or about a 10 percent gain on the scale, and it’s something that became evident when I had to make an abrupt manoeuvre on the highway.

As I was merging into the middle lane, another driver quickly merged into the same space from the passing lane. I swerved a bit and got on the brakes and the GS450h wagged its tail a little more than I would’ve expected from something with performance aspirations. Keep in mind, I was driving the car in Normal mode, rather than the Sport or Sport + modes that boost suspension responsiveness. The GS450h also offers an EV mode that allows you to drive for short distances on battery power alone, which is a usable feature in the traffic in and around Boston.

Fuel economy for such a big car isn’t bad at an observed 26 miles per gallon average. The EPA suggests that you can see as much as 34 miles per gallon on the highway. It gives the GS450h a not insignificant 10 miles per gallon average advantage over the GS350 AWD. But it also comes at a price. An all-wheel-drive GS350 starts at $49,950. The GS450h starts at $60,430. Our tested version climbed past the $62,000 mark. That’s a lot of gas.

The price and the handling in Normal mode are my two biggest reservations. On the plus side of the ledger, the GS450h features a passenger cabin that easily rivals competitors from Europe. Stepping into the GS450h, the first thing you’ll notice is how much brighter it is than lesser trims in the GS line.

Our tested version featured the optional Luxury Package with light grey perforated leather interior, made even brighter by the light-coloured bamboo trim on the console, dash, and steering wheel. This, along with the sunroof, makes the GS450h seem much bigger inside than it really is.

Maybe it’s just me, but I’m really tired of seats that try to be Recaro racing buckets. There’s a place for those kind of seats, and it’s not in the cabin of a luxury car. According to my backside, the GS450h has the most comfortable, luxurious seats of any luxury car on the market today. They’re supportive, but in a way that recalls the buckets of the old Saab 9000 Aero, which are the benchmark for comfortable automobile seats.

One of the first things I do when I get in any new car is pair my phone. On some cars, it can be a maddeningly frustrating process, but in the GS450h—and all of the Lexus cars I’ve sampled—it’s simple to figure out how the pairing process works. Take this tip, auto manufacturers: If your customer selects “BLUETOOTH” under the media menu and a phone or media player isn’t found, begin the pairing process automatically with an option to cancel out, instead of having to initiate the process manually.

The cabin can be complemented with an available Mark Levinson audio system. With 17 speakers located all over the place, the system cranks out 835 watts of power. This ain’t your daddy’s Sparkomatic. It rocks. Lexus pretty well integrates all of the infotainment technology by means of the console-mounted joystick, but also keeps intuitive knobs and buttons for the radio and heat controls, which is a welcome departure from the era when manufacturers decided to bury all of those controls under sub-menus.

But with the exception of the bamboo trim and the hybrid drivetrain, you can get everything on the GS450h in any other GS trim, at a significantly reduced price. You could buy 2,500 gallons of gasoline with the price difference, enough to get you 50,000 miles, even at the GS350’s least optimistic fuel economy estimate. With that in mind, the question remains: Why spend the extra dough?

Bentley and Rolls-Royce in record profits

Luxury car manufacturers are reporting high profits for last year and this year already. With Bentley and Rolls Royce up there too, it’s nice to see some British car royalty sharing a large piece of the pie.

Britain’s leading luxury car manufacturers Bentley and Rolls-Royce both achieved record profits last year as demand for classic car marques continues to grow.

Bentley, which accounts for one in every four luxury cars sold around the world, saw sales jump a fifth to £1.4 billion to the year ending December 31, 2013. Profits rocketed from £108 million to £181 million as it sold a record 10,120 cars.

It is a remarkable performance for the company, which recorded a pre-tax loss of £293 million on a £591 million turnover just three years ago.

Since buying Bentley in 1998, owner Volkswagen has invested more than £1 billion in improving production at its manufacturing plant in Crewe, Cheshire.

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars, owned by Germany’s BMW, sold a record 3,630 cars last year, all handmade to order at Goodwood, West Sussex. A spokesman said: ‘There is an appetite around the world for quality, luxury and Britishness.’

Bookings have commenced for Mercedes India on upcoming models

We like to keep up to date on the luxury car market across the globe, especially India and China where they take luxury very seriously! Mercedes are making big waves in India at the minute and it doesn’t seem to be relenting any time soon.

Mercedes Benz India has commenced bookings for two of its upcoming models – the new GLA compact luxury SUV as well as the diesel version of the S-class, the S 350 sedan.

The Mercedes GLA compact luxury SUV is based on the front-wheel-drive MFA-platform that also underpins the A- and B-class. The SUV is comparable in size to the Audi Q3 and is expected to go on sale in India around the festive season. Mercedes dealers are currently taking orders for only one variant of the GLA, the GLA 220 CDI diesel. Mercedes Benz had showcased the GLA SUV at the Auto Expo 2014 earlier this year.

The Mercedes GLA 220 CDI is expected to come with a 2143cc diesel motor good for 167bhp. This is the same motor that does duty on the Mercedes A-class hatchback where it is detuned to put out 107bhp. The booking amount for the GLA 220 CDI is Rs 50,000 with deliveries being promised around September-October 2014.

Mercedes Benz has also started taking bookings for the diesel-powered S-class sedan. The S 350 CDI will be manufactured locally and will officially launch on June 5, 2014.

The Mercedes-Benz S 350 CDI will have similar equipment levels as the locally-made S 500, although it will skimp on certain features available on the range-topping version. The Burmester sound system will come without 3D surround system and there’ll be plain leather upholstery instead of nappa. The rear seat will be a bench instead of two individual seats. The S 350 CDI won’t have centre-armrest mounted tables for the rear passengers, nor chilling and heating cupholders. It will get a normal reversing camera instead of the 360-degree unit on the S 500. The Mercedes night-vision package also won’t be on offer on the S 350 CDI.

Mercedes is expected to price the S 350 CDI at around Rs 1.25 crore (estimated, ex-showroom). The Merc S 350 is a fair bit more expensive than direct rivals like the A8 L 3.0 TDI (Rs 1.12 crore), BMW 730Ld (Rs 1.02 crore) and the recently launched, locally assembled Jaguar XJ 3.0 TDI (Rs 92.1 lakh). The premium Mercedes is asking for over rivals can be put down to the fact that the S 350 is a whole generation ahead in terms of tech on offer. The booking amount for the S 350 CDI is Rs 5 lakh with deliveries being promised by end-June or early July.
